Three jobs travelling under one word
Placement sounds like a single task and is in fact three, each capable of stopping the other two. There is the search, which is persuasion. There is the paperwork, which is compliance between two institutions that have never met. And there is the record, which decides whether the hours you worked count as hours.
Handled together they fit around one another. Handled by a student in the evenings between shifts they queue, and the queue is what produces a rotation beginning three weeks into a term that runs for eight. The house takes all three, or any one of them.
- ◆A preceptor and site sought through a working network rather than a directory
- ◆Credentials and specialty checked against what your program will actually accept
- ◆Affiliation agreements prepared and filed between the school and the site
- ◆Hour logs and end-of-rotation evaluations kept current as the rotation runs
- ◆A second site held in reserve, in case the first withdraws late
The search cannot be made up later
A term missed for want of a preceptor is not recovered by working harder in the next one; it is recovered by waiting for the next intake, which costs a season rather than a weekend. So the search begins early here, and an honest range is given rather than a promise.
The method is unglamorous and it works: a live network approached directly, in your state and specialty, each prospect checked against the credential rules your program applies before anybody's time is spent. Where a state or specialty is genuinely difficult, you are told at the quote rather than in the eighth week.
Paperwork between two institutions
The agreement that has to exist between your school and your site is nobody's priority except yours. It travels between two administrative offices with different forms, different signatories and different ideas of urgency, and it must be complete before the first hour is worked or that hour does not count.
So it is chased rather than sent. Forms are prepared in the format each side expects, submitted in the order that avoids one office waiting on the other, and followed until both have signed. Patrons taking stewardship of the course alongside this rarely notice the process happening at all, which is the intention.
Hours that the record does not know about
Documentation systems differ by school, and Meditrek is only the most familiar, but the principle holds everywhere: hours worked and unrecorded are hours you may be asked to work again. An evaluation left unsigned at the close of a rotation has a way of becoming uncollectable.
Entries are kept current as the rotation runs rather than assembled at its end, evaluations are requested while goodwill is fresh, and the file is complete when your program asks for it. Where a doctoral project follows, research counsel takes it from there.
Tell us the state and specialty
Your program, the hours required, the state you can travel within and when the rotation must begin. A quote returns within two hours, free.
The search begins at once
A live network is worked directly, prospects are checked against your program's rules, and you approve a site before any paperwork moves.
The file stays complete
Agreements are filed, hours and evaluations are kept current as you go, and a reserve site waits quietly in case it is needed.
Questions put to the house
How quickly can a preceptor be found?
Weeks rather than terms is the usual experience, but the honest answer depends on your state, your specialty and how many hours are required, so a realistic range is given once those three are known rather than before. Where a combination is genuinely difficult, you are told so at the quote stage, when it still costs you nothing to hear it.
What happens if my preceptor withdraws?
A second site is held in reserve for exactly that, because withdrawals happen late and for ordinary reasons: staffing, illness, a change of employer. The reserve is confirmed as a possibility rather than merely noted, so the switch costs days instead of the remainder of a term. Paperwork for the new site is then filed on the same footing.
Can placement be taken without any coursework?
Yes, and many patrons do precisely that. Placement is priced as an engagement of its own, so you may bring the search and the paperwork here and keep every assignment yourself. It works the other way round as well: coursework may be taken while you arrange your own site. Neither half is a condition of the other.
Do you handle student teaching and internships too?
Yes. The pattern is the same across nursing clinicals, education placements and internships in other fields: a site that will have you, an agreement between two institutions, and a record kept current throughout. The forms differ and the vocabulary differs; the sequence does not, and the people filing them have filed those particular forms before.
Will my university know that this was arranged for me?
Nobody from this house contacts your institution. Correspondence with a site is conducted so that what reaches your school is simply the completed paperwork a placement produces. Accounts here are anonymous, billing descriptors read discreetly, and the particulars of an engagement are seen by the specialist holding it and by nobody else.
