What a capstone actually produces
Format varies by field far more than the marking does. Underneath, every one of these asks the same thing: identify a real problem in a real setting, propose something defensible, and show how anyone would know afterward whether it worked.
- ◆Nursing: an improvement project with measures taken before and after it ran
- ◆Education: a curriculum unit or a program evaluation a school could adopt on Monday
- ◆Business: a consulting report, a market entry case or a financial model with assumptions
- ◆Technology: an implementation, a security assessment or a system design with a rollout
- ◆Public health or administration: a policy brief carrying an implementation route
- ◆Psychology and social science: a program proposal with an evaluation plan attached
Two readers, two sets of priorities
Your faculty reader wants rigor: literature that supports the choice, a method that could bear scrutiny, measurement defined before rather than after. Your site sponsor wants feasibility: what it costs, whom it disrupts, and whether the staff on shift will actually do it once the enthusiasm has moved on.
A document satisfying only one of them gets returned by the other, which is the most common reason a capstone runs into a second term. So it is built to be read twice: an executive summary that a sponsor can act on, and a methods and evidence section that survives a faculty reading, with the same claims in both rather than a softened version in one.
The presentation carries more of the mark than expected
Many programs weight the defense, poster or final presentation heavily, and a good many candidates discover the weighting the week before it happens. It is graded on whether you can explain the work in the time allowed and answer a question you did not choose, not on the design of the slides.
So the questions are anticipated from the document itself: the limitation acknowledged too briefly, the measure a sponsor might dispute, the recommendation the budget will not carry. Where a program treats the capstone as a full research document instead, mentoring runs it stage by stage, and nursing candidates should read how a practice project differs from both.
Send the handbook and the setting
Your program's capstone requirements, the site or organization involved, and the term it must be finished in. Reading it is free.
The deliverable is named
What the artifact actually is, who signs it off, and which parts require you personally, all settled before drafting begins.
It is built to be read twice
Written for the sponsor and the faculty reader together, with the presentation prepared alongside rather than after the document closes.
Questions put to the house
How is a capstone different from a dissertation?
A dissertation is expected to contribute knowledge; a capstone is expected to produce something usable in a particular setting. That changes what earns marks. Feasibility, cost, adoption and evaluation carry weight that a dissertation reserves for originality and method, and the document is usually shorter, more practical and answerable to somebody outside the university as well as inside it.
My site sponsor and my faculty reader want different things. What now?
That is the ordinary condition rather than a problem to be resolved. The document is written so both can find what they need without contradicting each other: an executive summary the sponsor can act from, and an evidence and method section that holds up under academic reading. The claims must match in both, since a softened version for one reader is what usually gets caught.
Can you take only the presentation or only the report?
Yes, each is quoted separately. Some patrons bring a finished project and want the presentation, the poster or the executive summary built and rehearsed; others bring an approved proposal and want the document written from the data they collected. There is no requirement to hand over the whole thing, and no discount that depends on doing so.
Does the house handle non-nursing capstones?
Yes. Education, business, information technology, public health, administration and the social sciences are all ordinary here, assigned to a specialist holding a credential in that field rather than to a general writer. Where a capstone needs technical work nobody here does properly, that is said during the assessment instead of attempted, and the assessment costs nothing.
What if my project fails to produce the result I predicted?
That is a finding, and written properly it can score as well as a success. Committees read for whether you measured honestly, noticed what happened and can explain why the expected effect did not appear. A project quietly rewritten to look successful is both dishonest and easy to see through, so what is written here is what the data actually showed.
